WILKES PULLS OUT NAIL-BITER IN BATTLE OF REGIONALLY-RANKED TEAMS

Wilkes University freshman Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won the final match of the day in singles play to lift the Lady Colonels to a 5-4 win over Haverford at the Ralston Courts.

The Lady Colonels entered the match ranked 15th in the region, while the Fords came in at No. 17.

In doubles action, the tandem of Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) and Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China/Warren Hills (N.J.)) had their match in hand at 6-1, but three-straight wins by Helen Fisun and Rachal Torg kept the match close at 6-4. Knight and Zhang would pull out the next two games to give Wilkes an early 1-0 lead.

The advantage wouldn't last long as Haverford's Jaclyn Porter and Katie Wettick came back from a 5-2 deficit to tak an 8-6 win over Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) and Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) to tie the match at one. The duo of Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) and Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) gave Wilkes a 2-1 lead going into singles play with an 8-4 win over Katie Drooyan and Fumiko Shogase.

In singles action, Nolt, ranked 22nd in the region broke a 4-4 match tie with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Wettick, who is currently ranked No. 19 in the region to give the Lady Colonels the overall victory.

Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) gave Wilkes a 3-1 lead with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Rachal Torg at the No. 6 spot, but Drooyan cut into the Lady Colonel advantage with a win at the No. 4 position.

Zhang put Wilkes back on the winning track with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot, giving it a 4-2 lead before the Fords battled back to win the next two singles matches, tying the contest at four games each.

The win snapped a three-match losing skid for the Lady Colonels and are now 10-3 on the year.
