Box Score
The Wilkes University baseball team challenged Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday night under the lights, and after nine innings of baseball found itself on the short end of the stick, falling 7-2 behind four errors.
Zach Lazar (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) got the start for the Colonels, and in the top of the first inning Wilkes loaded the bases on walks and an error by the Scarlet Raiders. After an unearned run was scored,
Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) singled to score
Matt Ruch (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer ), giving Wilkes an early 2-0 lead.
From that point on Wilkes only recorded five more hits in the contest, and in the bottom of the third Rutgers-Newark answered, scoring two runs on four hits and taking advantage of a Colonels error. In the fourth they added three more runs, as Wilkes committed two more errors in the frame.
In the seventh Wilkes had a chance to climb back into the game, but left the bases loaded, ultimately falling 7-2. The only Colonel with two hits was
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West), while Skammer recorded the only RBI for Wilkes.
The Colonels will have a chance to bounce back when they host Eastern University on Friday, April 23. That game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
