Box Score
The Wilkes University baseball team headed up to Dallas, Pa. on Monday to take on Misericorida, ultimately falling by a score of 6-2.
On the mound for the Colonels was
Tom Buckler (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), who was coming off a win against the Cougars on Thursday.
In the first inning Misericordia took advantage of an early Colonel mistake, as a walked batter stole second, then eventually scored on a Wilkes error, giving the Cougars an early lead without a hit. In the second frame Misericordia scored another runner on a wild pitch, pushing its lead to two.
In the fourth inning the Cougar bats came alive, hitting two quick doubles for another run, then scoring a fourth run on another wild pitch and taking a 4-0 lead. The Colonels answered in the sixth inning, as
Angus Neary (Old Forge/Riverside) doubled, scoring
Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) and
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) and pulling Wilkes back into the game.
In the bottom of the eighth Misericordia led off with back-to-back solo home runs off of Colonel relief pitching, extending its lead to four runs with Wilkes having one more shot in the ninth. Unfortunately, the Colonels couldn't put together the necessary offense to climb back into the contest, falling 6-2.
Wilkes had six hits in the game, two of which were by Neary, who handled nearly all of the offense for the Colonels. Misericordia only had seven hits, but took advantage of Colonel mistakes that led to runs.
With the loss Wilkes is now 6-10 (2-7) on the season, and will look to grab a win when it hosts Baptist Bible College on Tuesday, April 6. That game will begin at 3:00 p.m.
