The Wilkes University baseball team hosted PSU Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, defeating the Nittany Lions 34-4 while senior
Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) became the school's all-time leading run scorer with 144.
On the mound for the Colonels was
Zach Lazar (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area), making his second start of the season. After allowing two runners to get on in the first, a quick double-play by
Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) and
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) ended the threat. In the bottom of the first
Angus Neary (Old Forge/Riverside) hit a two-run home run, giving Wilkes an early lead form which they never looked back.
Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ) knocked in two more, and after the first Wilkes had a 6-0 lead.
The Colonels tacked on two more in the second, as
Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) came in to pitch for Wilkes. PSU scored two in the third, as Wilkes used a slew of pitchers the rest of the game. Home runs by Lopresto and
Matt Ruch (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer ) added six runs, while
Joe Dantas (Reading, Pa./Fleetwood) hit a grand slam in the sixth, as Wilkes ran away with the contest, winning 34-4.
Lazar picked up the win for Wilkes on the designated staff day, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The Colonels will take their win streak to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville on Friday, April 9. That game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
