The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team hosted Moravian on Thursday, ultimately falling to the Greyhounds by a score of 21-12.
Wilkes struck first in the contest, as
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas) found
Stephanie Harkins (Larksville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) in front of the Greyhound goal, giving the Lady Colonels an early 1-0 lead. Moravian scored soon after, but another goal by Harkins pushed the Wilkes lead back to one.
A few minutes later,
Melissa Farrell (Broomall/Marple Newton HS) scored on a pass from
Amelia Farnham (Guilford, CN/Guilford HS), giving Wilkes a 3-1 lead with over 20 minutes in the half. One minutes later, Farnham scored on a free position goal, pushing the lead to three. In the next five minutes Moravian scored four goals, taking a 5-4 lead and forcing a Lady Colonel timeout.
The Greyhounds owned the rest of the period, scoring nine unanswered goals before
Erica Sundberg (Mullica Hill, N.J./Kingsway HS) ended the streak on rebound goal, making the score 12-5 at the break.
In the second period Moravian scored an early goal, but Wilkes answered with scores by Sundberg and Jacqueline Harrison. The six point deficit is as close as the Lady Colonels would get, although each team would continue to score as the game progressed.
With seven minutes left the deficit was once again six after a Sundberg goal, giving Wilkes new life. Unfortunately, Moravian scored a few more goals before the game ending, winning 21-12.
Wilkes was led by Sundberg with four goals, while Harkins added three. The 12 goals by Wilkes is the most its scored this season.
The Lady Colonels will look to bounce back when they head to Chester, Pa. to take on Widener on Sat. April 10. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
