The Wilkes University baseball team couldn't have scripted a better way to play its final two games as the Colonels swept Delaware Valley, winning the first game 11-9 before taking the second 12-3.

Not only was it the final two games on the schedule, but it was the final collegiate games of seven seniors, who all contributed in the victories. Catcher Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ) had one of the best days of his career as he went 4-for-6, including 4-for-4 in the first game with a grand slam and eight runs batted in. His round tripper in the sixth put the Colonels up for good as the Colonels trailed 7-5 prior to his at-bat.

Shortstop Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) also finished his career off on a high note as he picked up three hits and scored two runs while driving in a pair. Shawn Ward (Moosic, Pa./Riverside), Jeremy Watson (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and Trevin Jaggers, all of which were playing their final games, picked up hits in the first win.

Delaware Valley opened with two runs in the first inning, but the Colonels cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame when Dengler singled to left field to plate Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas), who led off the inning with a single. The Aggies battled back for two more runs in the second to lead 4-1, but the Colonels kept it close with two runs in the third on an RBI single by Dengler and a bases loaded walk by Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West).

After the Aggies put up two more in the fourth, the Colonels answered with two runs of their own on a two-run double by Dengler. The Aggies put up a run in the sixth before Wilkes exploded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Both teams finished with 13 hits and four errors in the field. Mark Siebel (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) pitched one-third of an inning to pick up the victory before Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) finished off the game.

In the second game, the Colonels put up seven runs in the first inning to put the game away early thanks to six hits including two-run singles by Tom Plessl (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland ) and Justin Fortin (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg).

The score would remain 7-0 until the Colonels put up another run in the fifth. Delaware Valley scored two runs in the sixth before the Colonels put up four more in the bottom of the inning.

Wilkes finished with 12 hits and pitcher Tom Buckler (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) went the distance in his final appearance in a Colonel uniform. He scattered nine hits and gave up three runs while striking out four.

The Colonels finished with an overall record of 13-19.
