The Wilkes University women's tennis team is one step away from winning its fourth-straight Freedom Conference Championship and another trip to the NCAA's after shutting out Manhattanville 5-0.
After a brief rain delay, both teams were able to take the court where the Lady Colonels won all three doubles matches and took command of the match.
Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) and
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) cruised to an 8-1 victory over Julia Romano and Joeliza Valdez before
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) and
Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) downed Nell Kucich and Kaitlin Triano 8-2 at the No. 2 position.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) and
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) completed the sweep at the No. 1 spot with an 8-1 victory over Scarlette Rodriguez and Boramy Siek.
Needing just two singles victories to clinch the match, Wilkes relied on its top two players in Nolt and Lynn to clinch the match. At the top position, Nolt took a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rodriguez before Lynn completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
The Lady Colonels will now take on the winner of the King's vs. Misericordia matchup on Saturday morning at the Ralston courts for the opportunity to represent the conference in the NCAA Championship.
