HINZE SHINES AS COLONELS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT WITH 77-60 VICTORY AT DESALES

CENTER VALLEY, PA – Senior center Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) poured in a season-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead visiting Wilkes University to a 77-60 Freedom Conference victory at DeSales University Saturday afternoon at Billera Hall.

With the win Wilkes improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, winners of four straight. DeSales drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Freedom contests.

Wilkes went to their premier big men early and often as Hinze and Paul Huch (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) scored the Colonels first 13 points of the contest. Matt Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) hit two free throws to give Wilkes a slight 15-14 advantage with 11:26 on the first half clock. The teams traded baskets over the next ten minutes of play as the action was fast and furious in both teams' offensive ends. Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) drained a three-pointer with 1:58 left in the first half to give Wilkes their largest lead of the frame, 31-24. Two quick Bulldog scores cut the Wilkes lead to 31-28 at the break.

Hinze continued to flex his muscle down low in the second half scoring eight straight points to keep Wilkes up seven at 44-37. After a DeSales miscue, Mullins connected from behind the arc to extend the lead to 10, 47-37 with 13:46 left in the contest. Wilkes continued to torch the nets midway through the frame scoring on seven straight possessions to keep the Bulldogs at bay. A Hinze dunk off a Huch pass coming out of a Colonel timeout put the finishing touches on the fourth straight Wilkes win.

Hinze enjoyed his best outing of 2011-12 finishing an efficient 9-for-11 from the field. Huch was equally as impressive finishing with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting including two three-pointers. Mullins joined Hinze and Huch in double figures with 12 points, five rebounds, and three helpers. The Colonels shot season-highs 57.7 percent (30-52) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-11) from behind the arc. They also took care of the basketball finishing with just 10 turnovers throughout.

Brett Moyer led DeSales with 16 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs had trouble with Wilkes' pressure defense as the Colonels caused 17 DeSales miscues in the contest.

Wilkes will return to the court Monday in a non-league matchup with Commonwealth Conference member Lebanon Valley at 7:00 p.m. in the Marts Center.
