ST. DAVIDS –
Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) tossed two complete games, striking out 13, and
Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) hit a three-run homerun in game two as Wilkes University split a Monday doubleheader with Eastern University, losing 7-5 before holding on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
The Lady Colonels got on the board early in the opener, getting a single by Bixler followed by a double by
Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley), the reigning Freedom Conference player of the week.
A groundout by
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) brought home Bixler and a double down the left field line by
Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) drove in Borger as the Lady Colonels took the 2-0 lead.
Amanda Holston (Frankford, DE/Sussex Central) followed that up with a single to left and Follweiler took advantage of a fielding error, scoring Wilkes third run of the inning.
The Eagles didn't waste time getting on the board, as they responded with Wilkes three-run inning with seven runs in the bottom half of the first, fueled by seven hits, including six singles.
Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs), the Lady Colonels starter in the circle, was able to settle down, fanning the final two batters to get out of the inning. She then went on to allow just two hits the rest of the way and strike out six more Eagles in the complete game loss.
The Lady Colonels picked up two more runs, as Saltzer drove in a run on a sac fly in the fifth and Behrenshausen scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Borger went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Holston added two more hits.
Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor),
Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East), Bixler and Follweiler, each added a hit.
Eastern made things interesting in game two, but not until the bottom of the seventh inning.
Down 6-0, the Eagles began their half with a walk and a single. Another single the following batter, along with a fielding error, brought home one runner, and another single to center cut the Eastern deficit to 6-2.
A third straight single brought home a third run, before a ground ball became out number one before bringing home the fourth run.
A wild pitch made it a one-run game and emptied the bases, before a double put the game-tying run at second with just one out. Behrenshausen stopped the bleeding, however, and closed out the game with back-to-back groundouts to preserve the win.
Wilkes got the scoring started in the second inning after back-to-back walks by Saltzer and Follweiler put runners at first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Holston moved both runners up before
Cindy Diemer (Berwick/Berwick Area) smacked a double to center, bringing both home.
Two batters later,
Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) brought home Diemer, doubling down the left field line to give the Lady Colonels the early 3-0 lead.
Behrenshausen would allow five total runners to reach in the second and third innings, but fanned three Eagles batters, not allowing anyone to score.
In the fourth, the Lady Colonels put together a two-out rally as Paveletz doubled to right center. An error would put Brown at first and Paveletz and third before Brown stole second, getting two runners in scoring position.
Bixler then stepped to the plate and drilled a shot over the fence in center, as the Lady Colonels took the commanding 6-0 lead. It was her second homer of the year.
Behrenshausen threw her second complete game of the day, striking out five and giving up nine hits and the five seventh inning runs.
Paveletz was the only player with two hits, as Bixler, Borger, Follweiler, Holston, Diemer and Fife each added one.
The Lady Colonels (2-10, 2-2) return to the field on Thursday when they travel to Annville to take on Commonwealth opponent Lebanon Valley College. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.
