WILKES-BARRE – Freshmen
Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) and
Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each scored four times and 11 other Lady Colonels recorded a goal as Wilkes University easily handled Rosemont College 21-4 in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup on Monday at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
It is believed to be the first time in Wilkes program history that every player on the roster scored at least once.
Ford got things going for the Lady Colonels, getting an unassisted goal 28 seconds after the opening draw.
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas) tacked on another goal at the 27:35 mark before Rosemont got on the board with an unassisted goal from Ashley Fuller a minute later.
Davenport started a string of four straight goals at the 23:40 mark, as
Brittaney Costigan (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), Ford and Meerholz scored to give Wilkes a 6-1 lead with 21:30 left.
After Rosemont's second goal, the Lady Colonels reeled off eight straight, including goals from
Allie Grippo (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn),
Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and the first career goals by
Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) and
Kate McGurk (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley).
The Ravens added their third score of the game with 2:06 left before Meerholz snuck one past the goalie with 27 seconds to go to give the Lady Colonels a 15-3 advantage at the break.
The pace would slow in the second half, as Wilkes scored the first six goals, including one each from
Ally Bicskei (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township),
Jackie Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Milford Mill Academy),
Samantha Pavalko (Orwigsburg, PA/North Schuylkill) and
Justine Thimmel (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock), who had come out of the net to play the field in the final 30 minutes.
Thimmel got the win in goal for the Lady Colonels, saving three shots in the first half.
Meerholz added two assists to score six total points in the game and her 10 draw controls tied the school record that Ford set earlier this season against Manhattanville. Ford also finished with 10 ground balls, which ties her own season-high and is just one shy of the Wilkes record.
Wilkes totaled 49 ground balls as a team, breaking the previous record of 45 set in 2006 against Lycoming.
The Lady Colonels (3-8) have a quick turnaround as they host Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Arcadia University on Wednesday, with game time set for 4:00 p.m.
