WILKES-BARRE –
Angus Neary (Old Forge/Riverside) paced the Colonels with four hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer in the sixth inning, as Wilkes University handled Penn State Hazleton 14-2 in a non-conference baseball matchup on Monday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Colonels totaled 15 hits on the day, with 10 different chipping in. Seven of those 15 went for extra bases, including six doubles and Neary's homer.
Wilkes got off to a hot start with six runs on five hits in the first inning, including an RBI single from
Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) and run-scoring doubles from
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West),
Rich Cosgrove (Wilkes-Barre/Meyers) and
Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas).
The Colonels added three more in the third, with
Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) bringing home Skammer and Marino singling to right, bringing Ruch and
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) around.
A.J. Mihaly (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) started and pitched two-hit ball over four innings of work, striking out a pair to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Wilkes picked up a run in the fifth on an RBI double from Neary before getting four more in the sixth, with
Jonathan Drebitko (Minersville/Minersville Area) doubling home a run before the big three-run homer to left.
Phil Leid (Denver, PA/Cocalico) and
Angelo Trento (Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) each saw time on the mound, fanning three while giving up four hits in three innings of relief.
The Colonels (13-12, 7-8) are back in action on Wednesday when they start their three-game set with Delaware Valley College (5-14, 2-7). First pitch for the single game is set for 3:30 p.m. from Artillery Park.
