WILLIAMSPORT –
Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored seven goals, including four in the second half to lead a Lady Colonels rally, but it wasn't enough as Wilkes University fell to Lycoming College 24-15 in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Monday afternoon in Williamsport.
Finding themselves down 14-5 at the break, the Lady Colonels reeled off 10 goals in the second half, getting their deficit down to just 17-12 at one point, before eventually falling to the Warriors.
The Lady Colonels (3-11, 0-9) scored twice right off the bat in the second, as
Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) found the back of the net at the 27:25 mark then found Meerholz for another less than a minute later.
After two quick scores by Lycoming, the Lady Colonels got three straight over the course of 46 seconds to make the score 16-10. Meerholz hit the first one at 21:58 before
Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) got two within 21 seconds of each other.
Lycoming scored again quickly, but the Lady Colonels struck again with one each from Meerholz and Ford.
The Warriors scored twice more, answered by another goal from Ford, before Lycoming scored three straight and five of the last seven to close out the game.
The game remained low scoring in the first half, as Wilkes held a 2-1 lead at the 19:00 mark. That was before the Warriors went on a scoring binge, scoring five straight, three straight, and then five straight again to take the commanding nine-goal lead into halftime.
Meerholz got her seven goals on just 10 shots, adding three ground balls. Ford totaled seven points as well, scoring three times and adding four assists. She also tied a school single game record with 11 ground balls, the most since Jennifer Compton picked up the same amount against Lycoming back in 2006.
Dworak chipped in with three goals while
Allie Grippo (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) added two scores and an assist.
Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) went 58 minutes in the net for the Lady Colonels, saving 11 shots. She now sits just six shy of the school's record for saves in a career, currently held by Cassie Malone, who totaled 384 from 2003-06.
The Lady Colonels are in action on Wednesday when they host cross-town rival King's College at 4:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
