WILKES-BARRE –
Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) had three scores and
Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) set the school record for saves in a career, but the Lady Colonels couldn't come back from a 10-4 second half deficit, ultimately falling to King's at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Wednesday, 13-7.
The game began with the Monarchs scoring three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes, but Wilkes was not rattled, as Ford scored two goals in four minutes in the middle of the half, and
Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) added another score to tie up the contest. The score remained tied until the 1:06 mark when King's added another goal, and with 0:32 seconds to play the Monarchs took a two goal lead, 5-3.
At the 8:07 mark of the first half junior goalkeeper
Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) recorded her 385th save, making her the all-time saves leader in Wilkes University history. Fords goals coupled with Meerholz's score were the only offense for Wilkes in the half.
In the second period Wilkes came to within one on another goal by Meerholz, but the Monarchs then went on a five-goal scoring session, pushing their lead to six with 14 minutes to play. Wilkes scored a couple of goals, one by
Allie Grippo (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and the other by
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas), to come to within four, but again King's pulled away with three unanswered scores. Ford added another goal with six seconds left, making the final score 13-7.
Wilkes was paced by Ford with her three scores, while Meerholz added two of her own as well as two assists. Grippo and Davenport each had a goal apiece, while Grippo also recorded 10 ground balls. Cronin finished with 18 saves in her record-breaking day.
Wilkes will be back in action when they compete in their last away game of the season against Misericordia on Tuesday, April 26. That contest will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Dallas.
