WILKES-BARRE – Five different Lady Colonels won a pair of matches as Wilkes University clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's Freedom Conference women's tennis tournament with an easy 9-0 win over visiting Misericordia University at the Ralston Athletic Complex courts on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels (13-1, 5-0) completed their season sweep of the Freedom without surrendering a single point to any conference team.

Seniors Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) and Michelle Knight (Roaming Shores, OH/Trinity) were honored prior to the match for their contributions in a Wilkes uniform over the past four years.

Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) and Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) paired for the Lady Colonels easiest win in doubles play, defeated Cassie Foy and Jennifer Spott 8-2 at No. 3.

Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Bybel teamed for an 8-6 win over Michelle Cameron and Breanne Phillips at No. 1 while Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) also won 8-6, beating Ashley Mangabang and Courtney Otto at the second spot.

It also proved to be pretty easy for the Lady Colonels in singles action, with Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Spott at No. 6

Nolt got the win at first singles over Phillips, beating her 6-2, 6-0, while Kristofco and Donner each won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Bybel won 6-1, 6-0 over Foy at No. 4 and Lynn beat Mangabang 7-5, 6-2 in the second spot.

As the top seed, the Lady Colonels will host fourth-seeded Eastern University next Wednesday, April 27 in the Freedom Conference semifinals. The match is set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. from the Ralston Athletic Complex. With a win, Wilkes would host the winner of the Misericordia-King's College matchup in the finals on Saturday, April 30.
