WILKES-BARRE –
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) and
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) each notched the deciding victories for the Lady Colonels to finish the match early as Wilkes University swept Eastern University 6-0 in the semifinals of the 2011 Freedom Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex courts.
Shanaman posted her 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Kim Kirk about 10 seconds before Bybel finished up with Amanda Prescott 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) got the Lady Colonels first singles victory, defeating Christina Haahs 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
Wilkes opened up the match with three easy wins in doubles action, as
Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Donner blanked Jacquelyn Sauder and Amanda Prescott 8-0 at No. 2. Lynn and
Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) followed that up with an 8-1 win at No. 3 over Haahs and Kirk and Bybel and
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) finished with an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Bekah Roland and Allison Verdic.
The Lady Colonels also blanked Eastern earlier this year at home, winning 9-0 on April 15.
Wilkes (14-1) now advances to the finals where the Lady Colonels will host Misericordia University, which beat King's College 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Start time is set for 10:30 a.m. from the Ralston Athletic Complex.
