WILKES-BARRE –
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) got a 6-2, 6-3 deciding win at the fifth singles spot as Wilkes University defeated New York University 6-3 in a non-conference women's tennis matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and
Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) got the day started with an 8-5 win at the first doubles spot, as the Lady Colonels won the first three matches of the contest.
Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) and
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) followed it up with a 9-7 win at second doubles and Wilkes got a forfeit win at three.
After Wilkes got another forfeit win at No. 6 singles to take a 4-3 lead, NYU battled back with wins at each of the top three spots to cut the Lady Colonels lead to 4-3 with two matches still going on.
Shanaman then put away Sara Joo as the Lady Colonels locked up the victory.
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) then added on Wilkes sixth win of the day at the five spot.
Wilkes went 2-0 during the weekend, running its season record to 7-1. The Lady Colonels go on the road for their next three matches, starting with next Saturday's contest in Madison, NJ against FDU-Florham.
