WILKES-BARRE – Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) was a part of two wins, including a 6-0, 6-0 singles victory, as he was named the 2011 Freedom Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Most Valuable Player as Wilkes University handled rival Manhattanville College 5-1 to win its fourth straight conference title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.

Makos' win came over Chris Lin at No. 6, making his tournament record a perfect 4-0. Earlier in the match, he teamed with Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) to defeat Andres Rivera and Lin at third doubles 8-4, the Colonels first victory of the afternoon.

The Colonels (11-3) got their second win of the day soon after, as Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and Dakkota Deem (Montgomery, PA/Montgomery) defeated Karim Mahmoud and Dean Tahir 8-6 at second doubles.

The Valiants then rebounded, getting a hard fought 8-5 win over Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) at No. 1, as Wilkes went into singles action with a 2-1 lead.

Makos then started things off there with his win and Katz soon followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tahir at second singles.

McCollum then finished Manhattanville off, earning the decisive win over Mahmoud 6-4, 6-1 on an impressive lob shot.

This was the Colonels second win over Manhattanville this season, winning 8-1 in the regular season matchup.

Wilkes will now await word from the NCAA on its seed in the tournament and opponent, as regionals will take place Friday-Sunday, May 14-16. An announcement will be made next Monday evening, May 9.
