Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite) picked up two wins, including a 6-0, 6-0 singles victory, en route to being named the 2011 Freedom Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Most Valuable Player as Wilkes University defeated Misericordia University 5-0 to win its fifth straight conference crown and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
Bybel's win came over the Cougars Courtney Otto at fourth singles, stretching her combined tournament record to 4-0. She also paired with
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Michelle Cameron and Breanne Phillips 8-4.
The Lady Colonels (14-1) continued their strong start on the doubles side as
Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) defeated Misericordia's Ashley Mangabang and Otto 8-1 at two and
Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) and
Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) earned an 8-4 win over Cassie Foy and Jennifer Spott at three.
Heading to singles, Bybel disposed of Otto first, before Kristofco finished off Mangabang 6-1, 6-0 at three to get the Lady Colonels their fifth win of the day, clinching the match and the championship.
This was the Lady Colonels second win over Misericordia, as they beat the Cougars 9-0 in the regular season. In the seven matches this spring against conference opponents, including the two tournament wins over Eastern University and Misericordia, Wilkes did not surrender a single point, winning by a combined total score of 56-0.
Wilkes will now await word from the NCAA on its seed in the tournament and opponent, as regionals will take place Friday-Sunday, May 14-16. An announcement will be made next Monday evening, May 9.
