WAYNE, NJ – Wilkes scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings in game one, and
Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning in game two as the Lady Colonels split a doubleheader against William Paterson on Thursday afternoon, losing 6-5 in eight innings in game one and winning 6-1 in the second contest.
After falling behind early, the Lady Colonels fought back in game one with the help from a two RBI double from
Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, down two, Wilkes manufactured runs by taking advantage of Pioneer fielding mistakes, eventually tying the game at five runs apiece.
In the bottom of the eighth frame Wilkes returned the favor, allowing the game-winning run to cross home plate on an error in the field while losing 6-5.
Lindsey Behrenshausen started the contest for Wilkes, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits. Borger went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored, while
Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East),
Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) and
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) each collected two hits.
Bixler started game number two for the Lady Colonels, and performed masterfully out of the gate. She ended up facing 19 batters in the contest, walking one Pioneer and allowing no other batters to reach base. She didn't record a strikeout in the game, but solid defense and recorded no errors allowed for her to work deep into the contest.
Meanwhile, through the first four innings Wilkes struggled at the plate and found themselves in a tie heading into the top of the fifth. In that frame, Wilkes exploded with help from a 2 RBI single by Saltzer and a three-run blast over the fence from
Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh). With five runs on the board, Bixler and reliever
Heather Compton (Easton, PA/Easton) took care of the rest of the game, allowing one run to score in the seventh.
Bixler picked up her first win of the year in the game, while Follweiler's homerun gave her three on the season. She was also 3-of-4 from the plate. The victory moved the Lady Colonels to 3-13 on the year.
The Lady Colonels will now head back into conference action when they host DeSales on Saturday, April 9 at the Ralston Athletic Complex. That doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
