PITTSBURGH – For the second year in a row, Wilkes University's season has ended in the regional semifinals as the Lady Colonels lost to No. 8 Washington and Lee University 5-0 in the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Working through several lightning and rain delays in a match that was ultimately moved indoors, the Generals started off with an 8-1 win at first doubles as Lauren Lukas and Trelsie Sadler defeated
Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster/Lancaster Mennonite).
Washington and Lee then picked up 8-3 victories at second and third doubles, as the pairs of Jen Snyder and Ellen Yeatman and Sallie Griffin and Chelsea Mixson defeated
Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) and
Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and
Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) and
Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), respectively.
In singles play, Sadler defeated Bybel at the four spot 6-1, 6-3 before Snyder closed out the win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kristofco at three.
The Lady Colonels wrap up their season with a 16-2 record, winning the Freedom Conference and advancing to the NCAA championships for the fifth consecutive year.
Donner led Wilkes with 18 victories in singles action, while
Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) tallied 17 on the year. Kristofco with 16, Bybel with 14 and Nolt with 12 also each reached double-digit victories.
Donner and Kristofco were the winningest doubles pair, scoring 14 wins on the year while Nolt and Bybel won 13 and Lynn and Mitchell won all 10 of their matches.
The Lady Colonels went 5-0 against conference opponents during the regular season, making it more perfect by winning each match 9-0. Wilkes then defeated both Eastern University and Misericordia University 5-0 en route to winning the Freedom title.
Head coach
Chris Leicht won his fifth straight conference coach of the year award while Nolt was named player of the year for the second consecutive year. Bybel and Lynn each joined Nolt on the all-conference first team while Donner and Kristofco earned second team honors.
