WILKES WOMEN'S TENNIS CRUISES TO 9-0 WIN OVER ESU
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team opened the 2011 campaign in fine fashion posting a 9-0 win over Division II East Stroudsburg University Wednesday afternoon at the Ralston Courts.
With the win Wilkes moves to 1-0 on the fall season, while East Stroudsburg falls to 0-1.
Wilkes swept all three doubles flights to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. In #1 doubles, Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) posted a 9-7 win over ESU's Amanda Kaufman and Becky Lavsch. In #2 doubles, the squad of Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Alexis Donner (Belmar, NJ/Wall) defeated ESU's Allison Bean and Annie Vega, 8-0. Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, PA/ELCO) completed the sweep in doubles competition with an 8-0 win over Liz Logenhagan and Kasia Slezah.
In singles play, Shanaman recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win to up the lead to 4-0. Donner posted a 6-0, 6-0 win from her number three position, while Mitchell won 6-3, 6-2 in the number five spot. Kristofco took a 6-0, 6-0 win and Nolt finished off the clean sweep with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 12-10 win at number one.
Wilkes returns to the courts Saturday when they travel to Susquehanna University for a match scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
