MEN'S SOCCER DRAWS EVEN WITH VALIANTS 1-1 ON BRENNAN'S PENALTY KICK

EDWARDSVILLE –The Wilkes University men's soccer team drew a 1-1 tie with visiting Manhattanville College Saturday evening.
With the tie, the Colonels go to 5-9-1 and 1-4-1 in Freedom play while the Valiants go to 7-5-4 and 4-1-1 in Freedom play.

Wilkes got on the board at the 30:01 mark when a Joe Brennan (Oakdale, CT/Montville) penalty kick found the upper left post out of reach of the diving Valiant keeper. The Valiants got on the board at the 75:17 mark when Eros Olazabal found the net off an indirect kick from 20 yards out. Even a 1 apiece, the game did not go without drama. Seven cards including one red card were handed out by officials and multiple opportunities by both squads in the overtime periods made it an intense Saturday night at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

Gehers Brennan Sennior Day
As the Valiants were down a man in both overtime periods, the Colonels best chance to score came late in the second OT. Eric McAnena (Horsham, PA/Abington) took possession of the ball and dribbled around his defender to be left alone with the goalie. As the keeper approached, McAnena made a move around him and suddenly lost his footing. A Valiant defender quickly kicked the moving ball to escape the trouble.

Dave Marr (Muncy, PA/Warrior Run) gathered 12 saves for the Colonels and Steve Singson made six stops in goal for the Valiants.

Wilkes honored Brennan and Colby Gehers (Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) before the game for their contributions to the Wilkes program.

Wilkes returns to the pitch when they host the University of Scranton Wednesday at 7.
