COLONELS FALL IN 109-102 OVERTIME BATTLE TO LYCOMING
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team had a strong offensive showing, but it wasn't enough as Lycoming College toppled over the Colonels in overtime 109-102 Sunday afternoon at the Marts Center.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 2-1 while the Warriors improve to 3-1.
Wilkes fell behind early in the first half before Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.)'s three point shot brought the Colonels back into the game and gave them the 45-41 advantage going into halftime. Down 29-20, Shovlin made his first three pointer off a dish from Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West). A Warrior field goal was followed up by a Cameron Hinkle three on an assist from Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) to bring the Colonels to within three at 32-29 at the 6:38 mark. A Justin Miller layup was erased as Finkle found the net again, this time on an assist from Jourdon Wilson (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley). On the next Colonel possession Wilson found Shovlin for a deep three to even the score at 34. Another Warrior layup was erased on their next possession when Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) found Shovlin from behind the arc. A Furst rebound off a Warrior miss at the 2:26 mark led Shovlin to an easy layup in transition. Two Breznitsky jumpers and a Lycoming layup brought the score to 45-41 at the break.
In the second frame, the Colonels remained hot as they scored 11 straight points after being down 53-52 at the 16:10 mark. A pass from Bernard Edmonds (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) on a Colonel fast break found Sheldon for the easy two points. After a Shovlin layup and point after, Breznitsky and Shovlin found the rim again on jumpers on their next two fast breaks. The Colonels streak ended with a Shovlin steal that led to a Breznitsky layup in transition.
The Warriors got hot and fired back scoring on six of their next eight possessions to get them to within four at 70-66 with 8:34 remaining. Edmonds was worked into the mix in the second half as he provided a strong frontcourt game for the Colonels, contributing 12 points from inside the paint. The Colonels pulled away a second time, leading the Warriors 85-76 with 4:30 to play. A William Wingate layup, followed by two free throws, and a Chris Foreman layup made it 85-82 with 2:35 on the clock. Up 93-90, Foreman found the rim on a layup to bring the Warriors to within one. A Wilson free throw gave the Colonels a 94-92 advantage, but as time expired, Jerald Williams laced a jumper just in front of the free throw line to send the game to an extra period.
Edmonds started the overtime with a layup in the paint off a Breznitsky miss, but the Warriors found their stride down the stretch scoring eight straight points following the Colonel layup. Two Shovlin threes brought the Colonels to within three at 105-102, but with only 57 seconds left, the Colonels were forced to foul giving Lycoming four makes from the charity stripe to end the game at 109-102.
Wilkes was led by Shovlin who did all he could by contributing 38 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Breznitsky dropped 15 points while Edmonds led the frontcourt with 13 points and three blocks.
The Warriors had a balanced attack as seven different players scored double figures. Foreman led way by scoring 20 points while Williams scored 12 points of his own and dished 17 assists while recording seven steals.
The Colonels return to action Wednesday as they travel to Misericordia for an 8:00 p.m. game in their Freedom Conference opener.
