WILKES MEN'S CAGERS DROP 81-71 DECISION AT CCNY WEDNESDAY IN NON-LEAGUE ACTION

NEW YORK, NY – Despite a 23-point, eight rebound performance from junior center Bernard Edmonds (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area), visiting Wilkes University could not snap its three-game losing skid falling 81-71 at the City College of New York Wednesday night.

Wilkes falls to 2-4 overall dropping its four straight contests after starting the year with two victories. CCNY improves to 4-4 overall snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.

Edmonds kept the Colonels on pace in the first half scoring back-to-back buckets in the paint as Wilkes led 30-25 with just over four minutes left to play in the opening frame. A 6-1 run by CCNY to close the half sent the teams to the break tied at 35 apiece.

An Edmonds bucket to start the second half gave the Colonels the lead back, but it was short lived as CCNY used a 10-2 run to take a 55-50 lead with 9:41 left in the contest. Edmonds cashed in twice from the free throw line and Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) scored in transition to cut the deficit to 62-59 with 5:21 remaining.

From there, Anthony Lewis hit two consecutive jumpers to push the lead back to six and CCNY cashed in six straight times from the charity stripe as Wilkes fouled to prolong the game looking for a comeback that would fall short.

Edmonds led the Wilkes offense with a season-high 23 points and eight rebounds shooting an efficient 10-for-18 from the field. Breznitsky followed with 11 tallies and two assists. Wilkes leading scorer Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.), entering the game as the conference's leading scorer at 23.8 ppg, was limited to just nine points on 4-of-14 shooting.

Lewis led CCNY with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Reeves (13 points, 11 rebounds), Terence Johnston (14 points) and Paul Dail (13 points) rounded out the Beaver double figure scorers.

Wilkes returns to action Friday and Saturday  when the Colonels travel crosstown to King's College for the Monarch Classic Tournament. Wilkes faces Susquehanna Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the opening round.
