WILKES BASEBALL POSTS 11-1 WIN OVER PSU WILKES-BARRE IN HOME DEBUT SATURDAY

KINGSTON, PA – Freshman Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) led an explosive Colonels offense finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI's as Wilkes University posted an 11-1 win over Penn State Wilkes-Barre in its home debut Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park.

With the win Wilkes moves to 2-5 overall on the year, while PSU Wilkes-Barre drops to 0-1 after its season opener.

Wilkes struck for three runs in the first thanks to three hits in the frame. The Colonels loaded the bases using two walks and a single from Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood). Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) plated the Colonels first run hitting into a double play that scored Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area). Following another walk, Ruch doubled to left field scoring Dantas as Wilkes led 2-0. Another Colonel base hit by Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) plated Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) to cap off the Wilkes scoring in the first.

The Colonels bats continued to roll in the second scoring five more times. Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) connected on a three-run homer and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) added his second double of the contest plating two more Wilkes runs.

Wilkes would add two more runs in the third and one in the fourth to extend its advantage to 11-0 through eight innings of play. The Mountain Lions scored their only run in the eighth using a Wilkes miscue in the infield to plate the runner.

Ruch enjoyed a huge day with the bat going 3-for-4 with four RBI including the three-run homer. Pisanchyn added three hits and two RBI's, while A.J. Mihaly (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) finished 2-for-4.

Eric Bidwell (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) went four innings allowing three hits while striking out four to pick up the win. Marc Perry (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) entered in relief to throw four innings scattering four hits throughout. Brandon Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) pitched the ninth striking out the side to compete the Wilkes victory.

Matt Kempinski and Rob Bisson led PSU Wilkes-Barre with two hits each. Peter Kelly recorded the loss on the mound going just two innings allowing seven hits and eight runs.

Wilkes will return to action Sunday when the Colonels host Immaculata University for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. at Artillery Park.
