Steve Finkernagel Carmen Lopresto went 3-for-4 with four runs scored in the win against Eastern WILKES BASEBALL SURGES PAST EASTERN IN FREEDOM OPENER, 14-7 3/16/2012 6:21:00 PM Box Score WILKES BASEBALL SURGES PAST EASTERN IN FREEDOM OPENER, 14-7 KINGSTON, PA – Junior Zach Lazar (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) pitched six innings allowing just three runs on six hits to record the win on the mound as Wilkes University posted a 14-7 win over Eastern University in both teams' Freedom opener Friday afternoon at Artillery Park. Wilkes improves to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in Freedom play. Eastern drops to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in league games. Tay Sidler (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area) put Wilkes up early with his third long ball of the season, a two-run homer over the centerfield fence as the Colonels led 2-0 after one inning of play. Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) began the Wilkes second with back-to-back singles. Both runners moved into scoring position on a throwing error by Eastern's starter Ernie Stiegler. From there, Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) connected on a two-run double and later scored on Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer)'s RBI triple to right field. Ruch cross the plate for the Colonels fourth run in the frame scoring on a Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) double to left center as Wilkes extended its advantage to 6-0 through three. Wilkes added two more runs in the fourth as Lopresto began the rally with a leadoff single. M. Ruch followed with a walked setting up runners at first and second for Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers). Marino would reach on an error by the first basemen scoring Lopresto on the play. Sidler then hit into a double play plating Ruch to push the Colonel lead to 8-0 after fourth innings. Eastern finally got on the board in the fifth as Brendan Spall started the frame singling to centerfield. Following a strikeout, Dillon Schwartzer connected on a two-run homer cutting the Wilkes lead to 8-2. Andrew Butler doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Dave Prager to complete the Eagles scoring in the inning as Wilkes continued to lead 8-3. The Colonels opened up their lead in the sixth scoring six runs in the frame capped off by a three-run homer from S. Ruch. Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) and Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added RBI hits to provide Wilkes all the breathing room it would need to seal the Freedom victory. Lopresto finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored. S. Ruch and Marino added two hits each as the Colonels exploded for 13 hits in the contest. Lazar was brilliant throughout striking out six Eastern batters in six inning of work. He moved to 1-1 overall in three appearances this season as a starter.
