Wilkes earns their third straight victory in home opener against PSU Abington, 17-12

WILKES WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFEATS PSU ABINGTON IN HOME OPENER, 17-12

Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team continued its winning streak as they defeated Penn State Abington Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium, 17-12.

The Lady Colonels improve to 3-0 on the year while the Nittany Lions slip to 0-3 on the season.

Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) scored the first two goals of the game for Wilkes as they went up 2-0 seven minutes into the game.  Alexis Vanderslice's goal put PSU Abington on the board with 22 minutes left in the first half.  For the rest of the half both teams exchanged numerous goals.  At the break Penn State Abington held a slight advantage over the Lady Colonels, 8-7.

Wilkes took control of the second half and never looked back.  They scored the first three goals to take the lead once again.  The Nittany Lions did as much as they could to get back into the game.  Wilkes earned their third straight win on the season with a final score of 17-12.  The home opening victory was the first since 2009.

Midfielder Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) led the Wilkes attack on the afternoon.  She had seven goals and two assists.  Sophomore Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) followed with four goals and two assists.

In net for Wilkes, Justine Thimmel (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) started in net and Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) entered in relief in the second half to secure the win. Thimmel finished with three saves on the afternoon, while Cronin stopped five shots to record the win in net.

For PSU-Abington Chassidy McLaurin led the Nittany Lions with four goals on the afternoon.  In net, Shreya Soni had six saves.

Wilkes and Penn State Abington took the same amount of shots in the game, 29.  The Lady Colonels held the edge in ground balls (15-7) and draw controls (18-13).  The Nittany Lions had 17 turnover compared to Wilkes' 12.

Wilkes University is back in action Thursday, March 22nd  against Albright College.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
