WILKES BASEBALL SPLITS PAIR OF GAMES ON DAY THREE OF SPRING BREAK TRIP

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University baseball team split a pair of games Monday recording its first win of 2012 on day three of its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Colonels posted a 19-12 win over Penn State Abington in the first game of the morning, then dropped a 7-1 decision to Catholic University in the nightcap.

Wilkes stands 1-3 entering its fourth day of games on its six-day spring break.

In the win against Penn State Abington, Eric Bidwell (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) went five innings allowing eight runs to record the win on the mound. Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area), Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood), and Tay Sidler (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area) each homered for the Colonels who avenged a 10-7 loss against the same squad a day earlier. Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added four hits in the contest, while Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) and Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) contributed three hits each.

In the loss against Catholic, freshman starter Marc Perry (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) kept the Colonels tied at 0-0 heading into the sixth, but the Catholic bats came alive scoring four runs in the frame on way to the win. Perry was impressive in his first start in the Navy and Gold going 5 2/3 innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) led the offensive attack with two hits including a double. Mike Olerta (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee) also had two hits with one double.

Wilkes will be back in action Wednesday with a single game against Penn State Harrisburg at 9:00 a.m.
