WILKES BASEBALL DROPS PAIR OF GAMES AT KING'S TO CONCLUDE SEASON SERIES

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Host King's College completed a doubleheader sweep over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at Lippo Field as the Monarchs took the season series 2-1 with the wins. King's posted a 26-5 win in game one before edging the Colonels 7-4 in the nightcap.

Wilkes slips to 11-20 overall and 3-12 in Freedom games. King's improves to 11-17 overall and 5-10 in league contests.

In the opener, King's jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and continued the scoring onslaught with several big innings later. The Monarchs added two runs in each of the second and third innings, eight in the fourth, and seven more in the fifth to build a 25-5 lead after five innings.

Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) was the lone Colonel with multiple hits finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

In the nightcap, King's took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, keyed by a RBI single from Eric Bohem and a two-run triple by Rich Acierno.  Wilkes used the long ball to get back into the game as Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) and Tay Sidler (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area) belted back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning before Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) launched another solo shot in the third to tie the game at 3-3.

King's responded in the bottom of the third when Chris Sweeney singled and scored off a double by Bohem to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. King's added a run in the fourth after a double by Jim Baczkowski and subsequent sacrifice fly by Anthony Re. The Monarchs upped the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Bohem doubled and scored on a single from Mikus.

Wilkes scored a run in the sixth when Watson singled and later scored on an infield out by Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) to trim the lead to 6-4. But the Monarchs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to insure the conference sweep.

Watson led the offense in game two going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sidler, Ruch, Lopresto, Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood), and Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) each added one hit.

Zach Lazar (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) suffered the loss on the mound going 5.2 innings allowing 13 hits and seven runs while striking out three Monarchs.

Wilkes is back in action Tuesday when the Colonels travel to Plains, Pa. to face Penn State Wilkes-Barre at Hilldale Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
