WILKES SOFTBALL STUMBLES AGAINST KING'S LOSING TWO
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting King's College used two strong pitching performances and pounded out a combined 25 hits on way to two six-inning victories Saturday over host Wilkes University at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
 
Wilkes moves to 5-17 overall and 2-8 in league play following the sweep. King's improves to 23-5 overall and 7-3 in Freedom contests.
 
King's starter Annie Erndl shined in game one going six scoreless innings allowing just five hits while striking out one. The King's offense produced 11 runs on 12 hits including a five-run sixth inning to close out the victory in six frames.
 
Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley), Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area), Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville), and Maura Santarelli (Archbald, PA/Valley View) posted the hits for Wilkes as the Lady Colonels had a runner reach third base just once in the contest. Hughes suffered the loss in the circle going six innings allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits striking out six batters.
 
Game two look very similar as King's opened up a 5-0 lead after two innings including a four-run second frame. The Wilkes offense was only able to collect four hits throughout as King's starter Brittany Haight went six innings allowing just one run striking out three Lady Colonels.
 
Wilkes scored its only run of the game in the sixth when Bixler singled with one out. After Bixler moved to second on a groundout, Paveletz singled down the left field line plating the lone Wilkes tally.
 
Bixler suffered the loss in game two going one and a third allowing five runs on five hits before Heather Compton (Easton, PA/Easton) entered in relief. Compton went four and two thirds allowing seven hits and five runs.
 
Wilkes will take a break from Freedom play when its hosts Lycoming College in a doubleheader Monday at 3:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
