WILKES SOFTBALL EARNS SPLIT WITH LYCOMING

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University softball team used a Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) RBI single in the eighth inning of game one to post a 5-4 win, then fell 4-1 in game two as the Lady Colonels salvaged a split with Lycoming College Monday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

Wilkes moves to 6-18 overall following the split. Lycoming stands 8-19 overall on the season.

Lycoming led 2-0 after three innings of play in game one using two unearned runs to claim the advantage. Wilkes responded in the fourth as Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) started the frame with a double off the left field fence. Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with an RBI double to right center to plate the Lady Colonels first run of the contest. Maura Santarelli (Archbald, PA/Valley View)'s sacrifice fly to right tied the game at 2-2 scoring Seccia.

Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) gave Wilkes its first lead at 3-2 belting a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fifth. Lycoming answered with a run in the sixth tying the game at 3-3 using back-to-back hits including an RBI double from Holly Lansberry. The teams headed to extra innings with the score tied at 3-3.

In the eighth, Lycoming scored on an attempted pick-off at third base to take a 4-3 lead. Wilkes began the bottom half of the frame with a Borger walk to place runners on first and second. The runners advanced to second and third on a fielder's choice. From there, Seccia reached on a Lycoming error scoring Bixler on the play tying the game at 4-4. Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) then singled home the game-winner through the right side to secure the non-league win for the Lady Colonels.

Finch and Borger led the offense in game one with two hits each. Seccia scored two runs, while Borger crossed the plate twice.

Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) evened her mark at 5-5 on the year going all eight innings allowing eight hits and four runs, just one earned, while striking out six.

Lycoming jumped out to a 3-0 lead through five innings in game two and added one more tally in the seventh to hold on for a 4-1 win. The Wilkes offense struggled to find any rhythm posting just six hits. Bixler doubled and later scored when Borger connected on an RBI single  to plate the lone Wilkes run in the sixth.

Wilkes continues its home non-conference stretch Thursday when the Lady Colonels host Penn State Hazleton at 3:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
