DESALES UPENDS WILKES BASEBALL 9-2 IN SERIES OPENER
 
CENTER VALLEY, PA – Host DeSales University used 13 hits to score nine runs in a 9-2 win over visiting Wilkes University Friday afternoon at Butz Field in the series opener for both teams.
 
Wilkes slips to 12-21 overall and 3-13 in Freedom play. DeSales improves to 23-11 and 13-3 in league contests sitting atop the Freedom Conference.
 
With DeSales leading 1-0 through one inning, Wilkes responded with a run in the second to tie the game thanks to an RBI double from Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights). Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) singled early in the frame and scored on Pisanchyn's hit.
 
The Bulldogs then scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to open up an 8-1 lead after five innings of play. DeSales took the lead to the eighth where Wilkes plated one run. Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) led-off with a single through the right side followed by a Bobby Schappel double down the left field line. Skammer later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) to cut the deficit to 8-2.
 
DeSales added another insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth to recorded its 13th league victory.
 
Six Colonels reached the hit column with Skammer leading the way finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Schappell, Lopresto, Watson, Pisanchyn, Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer), and Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) each recorded one hit.
 
Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) suffered the loss on the mound going four innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits.
 
DeSales received a complete game performance from Colby Pacillo who scattered eight hits through nine innings while striking out eight Wilkes batters.
 
The teams will complete their season series tomorrow with a doubleheader matchup at Artillery Park starting at 12:00 p.m.
