WILKES BASEBALL EARNS SPLIT WITH DEL VAL IN FREEDOM FINALE
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University grabbed an early lead in game two and held on for a 7-3 win before visiting Delaware Valley College posted a 10-1 win in game one as the Colonels managed a split with the Aggies in both teams Freedom finales on Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park.
 
Wilkes moves to 13-26 overall and finishes Freedom play at 4-17. Delaware Valley sees its overall mark move to 16-20 and concludes league play at 8-13, narrowly missing the Freedom Conference playoffs.
 
In game two, Wilkes scored two runs in the first and two more in the second to open up a 4-0 lead after two innings. Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) collected an RBI groundout before a Delaware Valley fielding miscue led to the first Wilkes run. In the second, Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood) and Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) provided the power at the plate as Dantas connected on an RBI triple to deep centerfield and Ruch hit an RBI double to left-center.
 
After Delaware Valley scored three runs in the third to cut the Colonels lead to 4-3, Wilkes added three more insurance runs in the sixth to seal the victory. Ruch added his second RBI hit of the contest and Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) followed with an RBI single to left field to plate the Wilkes runs.
 
Sean Flecknoe (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R.) recorded the win on the hill going six innings allowing three runs on four hits throughout while striking out three Aggies. Brandon Carling (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge Area) pitched the seventh allowing just one hit in a scoreless frame.
 
Ruch led the offense finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI's, while Dantas also added two hits and one RBI. Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the win.
 
Delaware Valley's starter Chad Schmuck pitched a gem in game one going all seven innings allowing one run on seven hits while striking out 10 batters. The Aggies bats opened up a 5-0 lead after one inning and added four more runs in the sixth to secure the Freedom victory.
 
Wilkes plated its lone run in the fourth when A.J. Mihaly (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Tay Sidler (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area) who walked earlier in the frame.
 
Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) suffered the loss on the mound for the Colonels going five innings allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits. Lopresto went 2-for-4 while Sidler added two hits and one run scored.
 
Wilkes will wrap-up its 2012 campaign Tuesday with a road contest at the University of Scranton at 4:00 p.m.
