COLONEL BASEBALL DROPS TWO AGAINST MISERICORDIA IN FREEDOM DOUBLEHEADER
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Misericordia University completed a sweep of a three-game series with host Wilkes University Thursday afternoon posting a 13-7 win in game one before taking an 8-0 shutout victory in game two at Artillery Park.
 
Wilkes drops to 9-18 overall and 2-10 in Freedom play. Misericordia improves to 23-3 and 10-1 in league games following the sweep.
 
Misericordia opened up a 2-0 lead after one inning in game one as Kenny Durling and Jeff Slanovec provided RBI hits for the Cougars. Wilkes responded in the bottom half of the frame tying the game at 2-2. Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) singled and later scored when Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) tripled to right field. Ruch then scored on an RBI single from Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale).
 
The Colonels took their first lead of the contest, 4-2, in the third when Watson connected on his first homer of the season plating two. Misericordia tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth, but Wilkes wasted little time grabbing the lead back scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as the Colonels led 6-2 through four. Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood) provided the power at the plate connecting on a two-out, two-run double.
 
Misericordia then scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 10-6 advantage into the seventh. Three more Cougar runs in the final frame sealed the Freedom win.
 
Watson led the Wilkes offense in game one going 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Lopresto, Ruch, and Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) each added two hits. Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) recorded the loss on the mound going 4.1 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs (six earned) striking out one.
 
Game two proved to be all Misericordia and the Cougars offense didn't disappoint pounding out 13 hits and eight runs through seven innings of play. Cougar starter Matt Karabin went six scoreless innings allowing just six Wilkes hits throughout.
 
Lopresto led the Colonel bats with three hits. Zach Lazar (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) went five innings allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) to pick up the loss.
 
Wilkes will be idle through Easter break returning to the diamond Thursday when the Colonels host Penn State Wilkes-Barre in a nine-inning affair at Artillery Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
