WILKES WOMEN'S TENNIS SET TO FACE SUNY GENESEO IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Committee has selected the 49 teams that will compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. The Wilkes women's tennis team will travel to Amherst, MA to face SUNY Geneseo in the first round of play Friday at a time to be announced later in the week.

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first, second and third rounds played at regional sites, May 11-13. Meredith College and the Town of Cary will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 21-23 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 9.

The championship provides for a 49-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 39 conference champions, which form "Pool A." Three teams are selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining eight teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.

Wilkes (19-0) enters the tournament as the lone unbeaten team in the field. The Lady Colonels captured their sixth straight Freedom Conference championship with a 5-0 win over Misericordia University on Saturday. Wilkes will be making its sixth trip to the national tournament posting a 5-3 win over Ithaca in the first round last year before falling to Washington and Lee University in round two.

SUNY Geneseo (11-1) earned its way to the tournament capturing the State University of New York Athletic Conference's automatic bid. Wilkes and Geneseo met in the NCAA's during the 2009-10 season as Wilkes posted its first victory in school history at the national event, 5-3.
