WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS 71-54 AGAINST CROSS-TOWN RIVAL KING'S

WILKES-BARRE – Senior Matt Fiorino scored a season-high 28 points including six three-pointers to lead visiting King's College to a 71-54 win over Wilkes University Wednesday night at the Marts Center.

Wilkes falls to 7-8 overall and remains winless in Freedom play at 0-5. King's improves to 7-9 on the year, standing 2-3 in league games.

Lee Strause (Port Carbon, PA/Pottsville Nativity) layup gave Wilkes a 4-2 lead to start the contest, but the advantage was short-lived. The Monarchs answered with a 10-0 run and never looked back through the first seven minutes of play taking a 14-4 lead early. Two Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) free throws cut the deficit to six, 14-8, but a three-pointer from Fiorino and jumper from Tim O'Shea expanded the King's lead back to double digits, 30-17 with 2:14 left in the first half.

Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) canned a running jumper as the halftime buzzer sounded sending the Colonels into the half down 32-24.

Wilkes started the second frame as they did the first when Shovlin drove the lane for two cutting into the King's lead, 32-26. The Monarchs had another answer when Fiorino drilled another trey and subsequent jumper to up the advantage to eleven, 39-28 with 17:50 remaining.

The King's lead grew to nineteen when Joe Caffrey connected on a baseline jumper giving King's its largest lead of the game, 65-46 with just 2:15 left.

Breznitsky led the Colonels offensively with 12 points and two rebounds. Wilkes leading scorer Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) (24.3 ppg) was limited to just six points on 2-of-8 shooting leaving the game late with an ankle injury.

Fiorino finished 11-for-18 from the field and 6-of-11 from behind the arc on way to his game-high 28 tallies. O'Shea followed with 18 points and eight boards, while Caffrey added 11 points and six caroms.
