WILKES MEN'S TENNIS SENDS 13 SINGLES PLAYERS, 5 DOUBLES TEAMS TO SEMIFINALS OF MAC INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's tennis teams finished a strong showing on day one of the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex and Kirby Park courts.

13 different Colonels reached the semifinal round in singles play and five Wilkes doubles teams advanced to the semifinals in pairs competition.

At No. 1 singles, both Steven Wilson (Bronx, NY/JFK) and Max Appello (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) both advanced with straight set wins in their opening matches. Wilson, the top seed, won one match to reach the semifinals after receiving a bye, while Appello scored a pair of wins to reach the third round. If each should win in the semifinals, Wilkes would be guaranteed a champion as the two would square off in the finals.

At No. 2 singles, Michael Kranz (Depew, NY/Lancaster Central) and Dominic Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) both were two-match winners to reach the semifinals. As with No. 1 singles, should both Kranz and D. Parfianowicz win their semifinal match, they would meet in the finals.

The second and third seeds in the No. 3 singles bracket, Jacob Parfianowicz (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield), both advanced to the semifinals with straight set wins in the opening round and quarterfinals. Wilkes will have another shot at an all-Colonel final if both should win tomorrow.

Three Colonels advanced into the semifinals at No. 4 singles as Troy Haas (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman), Brian Murray (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein), and Connor Peckham (Warminster, PA/Central Bucks East) all reached the third round. Murray and Peckham will meet tomorrow on one side of the semifinals while Haas meets top-seeded Jacob Rohring of King's in the other matchup.

Top-seeded Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) reached the semifinals of No. 5 singles with two easy 6-0, 6-0 wins in the opening round and quarterfinals. He faces Darren Stochmal of Arcadia in the semifinals tomorrow.

The top two seeds at No. 6 singles advanced for Wilkes as Adam Lefkandinos (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Collin Strunk (Blakeslee, PA/Pocono Mountain West) posted straight set wins in their two opening matches. Lefkandinos and Strunk can meet in the finals if each should win tomorrow in semifinal play.

Dan Hackford rounded out the Wilkes semifinal participants at No. 7 singles. He faces Ryan Hegarty of King's tomorrow in the semifinals.

In doubles play, the Parfianowicz brothers moved onto the semifinals at No.1, while Makos/Wilson and Lefkandinos/Appello advanced to the third round at No. 2 pairs for Wilkes.

Blachowski/Kranz are into semifinal play Sunday at No. 3 doubles, while Haas/Murray and Strunk/Dennis Gilem rounded out the Wilkes doubles participants in the semifinals at No. 4.

Play resumes Sunday with semifinal and final rounds at 9:00 a.m.
