WILKES FIELD HOCKEY ENDS SEASON WITH 5-0 LOSS TO URSINUS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Host Ursinus College scored four first half goals and added one insurance tally in the second frame on way to a 5-0 win over Wilkes University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Wilkes sees its magical postseason run come to an end at 8-12 overall, while Ursinus improves to 15-5 overall and advances to the second round in Salisbury, MD to face Wesleyan on Saturday.

Ursinus went up 1-0 seven minutes into the contest when Samantha Macchio ran through the middle of the Wilkes defense scoring her first of three goals off an assist from Amber Steigerwalt. Steigerwalt added to Ursinus' lead scoring unassisted after a solo run into the circle beating the keeper to the right side.

The Bears added two more goals before the halftime break as Macchio tipped in a pass across the box and Stephanie Cooper redirected a long pass into the back of the cage.

Wilkes had three scoring opportunities in the first frame with its best coming off the stick of Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) which went just wide right of the cage. Devon Kriebel (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) had another chance for Wilkes late in the half, but her shot from six feet in front of the cage went high over the post.

Macchio notched her hat trick with 46:10 on the clock to seal the win for Ursinus.

Ursinus held a commanding 29-6 shot advantage throughout while garnering 12 penalty corners to Wilkes' one attempt.

Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) finished with 14 saves in net for Wilkes, while Bears keeper Danielle DeSpirito made two saves to record the victory.

Wilkes finishes the season winning the first Freedom Conference title since 1999 and first NCAA berth since the 1995 season. The Lady Colonels welcome a core group back to the program in 2014 looking to defend its league championship.
