HOT SHOOTING PROPELS BAPTIST BIBLE OVER WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL 77-74

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Baptist Bible College shot 50.0 percent from the field and held on late through a furious Wilkes University comeback to post a 77-74 victory over the Colonels Tuesday night at the Marts Center.

With the loss Wilkes slips to 2-1 on the year while BBC improves to 2-1 overall.

BBC used hot shooting throughout the first half as the Defenders connected on 13-of-26 attempts from the floor in the first stanza to take a 42-35 lead to the break.

Wilkes stormed back in the second half to cut the lead to four points numerous times throughout the frame. A Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) layup with 2:25 on the clock cut the deficit to 74-70. After a missed three-pointer, Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) collected the rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup to move the Colonels to within two. Two free throws from BBC pushed the lead back to four, but Jimmy Bracket scored inside for Wilkes on its next possession to bring it back to a one score game, 76-74.

BBC extended the lead to three points when Jordan Greve made one of two fouls shots to setup the final 23 seconds for Wilkes down by three. Wizar looked for his late game heroics for a second straight contest, but was well defended dribbling to the top of the circle before trying to pass as time expired.

The loss overshadowed a career-best performance from Wizar who finished with 28 points on 9-for-15 shooting including four treys. Hinkel was the only other Colonels to reach double figures finishing with 14 points and collecting seven rebounds. Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) added eight points and seven rebounds off the Wilkes bench.

Luke Peterson led four Defenders in double figures with a team-high 19 points, going 9-for-10 from the foul line. Dan Dodd followed with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Dan Decker and Abe Valentine added 14 and 13 points respectively.

Wilkes struggled shooting from the field finishing a combined 24-for-62 from the floor. The Colonels outrebounded BBC 39-35 in the contest.

Wilkes returns to the court tomorrow traveling to Hazleton, Pa. for a non-conference test against Penn State Hazleton at 7:00 p.m.
