SIX LADY COLONELS SCORE AS FIELD HOCKEY ADVANCES TO FREEDOM CHAMPIONSHIP
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – Six Lady Colonels scored goals as Wilkes defeated DeSales 6-2 on Wednesday evening advancing to the Freedom Conference Championship for the first time since 2008. Wilkes record improves to 7-11 while DeSales concludes their season at 8-10.

From the opening whistle Wilkes put the DeSales back line under pressure creating three shots and four corners in the first ten minutes of the game. In the 11th minute Ashley Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored the first Lady Colonels goal when she finished a goal one time off a rebound. In the 17th minute Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) doubled the Wilkes lead when she deflected an Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) shot high over top of DeSales goalkeeper Becky Rasmuson. Less than a minute later Emily Saliba (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East) got a goal of her own for the Lady Colonels when her high shot from the right side found its way through traffic and into the cage. DeSales got a goal back in the 27th minute when Jesse Marshall one-timed a pass into the cage off of a feed from Alison Malatesta. The Lady Cololnels stymied the DeSales attack and added a fourth goal before the break when Devon Kriebel (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) tipped in a Saliba initial shot. Wilkes outshot DeSales 9-3 and had a 7-1 advantage in corners for the half.

In the 44th minute Ream made it 5-1 when she rocketed a shot from the left side into the cage off of a corner feed from Hahn. Five minutes later DeSales made it 5-2 when Meryah Harding one-timed a pass from Malatesta into the back of the cage. In the 53rd minute Haley Coleman (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) scored the final goal for the Lady Colonels when she tapped in a pass from Hahn making it 6-2. For the game DeSales outshot Wilkes 18-16 while Wilkes garnered more corners 15-11. Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) made nine saves in goal for the Lady Colonels, making a few nice saves to stymie any DeSales momentum.

With 4th seeded Misericordia upsetting #1 seeded Delaware Valley the Lady Colonels will host the Cougars on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium for the Freedom Conference Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Lady Colonels won a Freedom Championship was 1999.
