Wilkes looks for its first Freedom Championship in 14 years on Saturday against Misericordia

FIELD HOCKEY HOSTING 2013 FREEDOM CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY

EDWARDSVILLE, PA -- After a dominating 6-2 performance in the Freedom Conference semifinals against DeSales University on Wednesday, the Wilkes University field hockey team will look to raise the MAC Freedom Championship plaque when they host Back Mountain rival Misericordia University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.

The Lady Colonels are playing in the Freedom Championship for the first time since 2008 when they lost to Eastern University 2-1. The last time Wilkes won a MAC Championship was in 1999, after they defeated Lebanon Valley 1-0 in overtime.

Earlier this year the Lady Colonels defeated the Cougars 4-1 in Edwardsville. After the game was tied at one, the Lady Colonels scored two straight goals to end the half up 3-1. They added an insurance goal early in the second half to seal the win.

Junior Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) leads Wilkes in points (27) and goals (12) including four game-winning tallies. Seniors Ashley Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) are second on the squad with 21 points each. Hahn contributes eight goals and five assists while Ream has notched six goals and a team-high nine assists. Freshmen

Taylor Ryan (Spotsylvania, VA/Courtland) and Devon Kriebel (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) have been solid contributors to the Wilkes attack that averages 2.44 goals per game. Ryan has 12 points on the season (five goals and two assists) while Kriebel chips in 11 points on five goals and one helper. Sophomore Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) has started all 18 matches in the cage for Wilkes. She has allowed 55 goals (3.05 goals per-game) while posting 155 saves (.738 save percentage).

Misericordia is led by sophomore Lindsay Hischak who has totaled 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. Jenn O'Neill is second on the team with 19 points (eight goals and three helpers) while Allie Elmes adds 16 points on seven goals and two assists. The Cougars net minder Angela Pasquini is a First Team All-Freedom Conference goal keeper. She has allowed 46 goals (2.35 goals per-game) and has made 182 saves (.798 save percentage). She also has two shutouts during the 2013 season.

Winner of the championship match will automatically qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships that are set to begin next week.

Fans are reminded that noisemakers are not permitted at either event. Wilkes also enforces a strict pet policy at the Ralston Athletic Complex and Schmidt Stadium. Animals not aiding individuals with disabilities are prohibited. Individuals, who bring animals to the complex in violation of this policy even when the animal is restrained, will be required to remove the animal from campus immediately.
