BASEBALL WINS FREEDOM CONFERENCE OPENER OVER KING'S 10-8

WILKES-BARRE – Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood) had big days at the plate to help lead the Wilkes University baseball team to a Freedom Conference opening win over King's Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-1 while King's falls to 6-2.

Wilkes got things started in the second, when Pisanchyn walked and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) each slapped a single. After Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) reached by a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) walked to force in a run before Eric Hauer (Wapwallopen, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) hit an infield single to plate a run of his own. Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Marino in for the last run of the inning. King's responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half with a two run home run by Anthony Lizzi.

Wilkes got one back in the third frame when Dantas and Pisanchyn singled to start the inning. Then, Ruch hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Dantas home. In the fourth, Hauer singled and Nick Craig (Springfield, PA/The Haverford School) walked before Lopresto reached on an error to load the bases. A Dantas single followed by a Pisanchyn single scored three runs as Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers)'s RBI single plated Dantas for the last run of the inning.

In the fifth, Wilkes brought home two runs after beginning the inning with two consecutive outs. After a Lopresto walk, Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) hit a single to center to score him. A Dantas double then scored Schappell to cap the scoring as the Colonels left two men on base. King's got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth and one tally back in the eighth to make it a 10-8 Wilkes advantage. A King's single and walk began the ninth, and they were advanced by a sacrifice bunt. After a Monarch walk, Tyler Schmitt (Gap, PA/Pequea Valley) was brought in with the bases loaded and one out only to enforce the game-ending double play. It is Schmitt's third save in as many chances.

Wilkes was led offensively by Pisanchyn's 4-for-4 performance while Dantas collected three hits of his own. Both offenses pounded out 13 hits. Brandon Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) earned the win for the Colonels going five innings, scattering nine hits and two strikeouts.  King's was led by Tim Marchetti with three hits.

Wilkes and King's will resume play tomorrow with a doubleheader being played at Artillery Park at noon.
