WILKES SOFTBALL CLOSES DAY TWO OF VIRGINIA BEACH BLAST WITH 1-1 MARK

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Wilkes University softball team earned another split Saturday afternoon on day two of the Virginia Beach Blast. The Lady Colonels fell 8-0 in five innings against Frostburg State before posting a 22-5 victory in five innings against York College (N.Y.).

Wilkes moves to 2-2 after the two-day tournament.

In game one against Frostburg, Wilkes was held to just one hit throughout as the Lady Colonels bats fell cold in the 8-0 defeat. Frostburg scored twice in the first and three more in the third thanks to a three-run home run and solo shot in the fourth.

Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) suffered the loss in the circle going four innings allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits. Hughes accounted for the line hit in the contest, a single to left field in the third.

In the contest against York, Wilkes opened a 5-1 lead after three innings before adding another tally in the fourth. The Lady Colonels then exploded for 16 runs in the fifth including a Vickie Warne (Philadelphia, PA/Milton Hershey) grand slam home run, her first as a Lady Colonel, to secure the 22-5 victory in five innings.

Wilkes pounded out 18 hits in the contest, including six for extra bases. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford), Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley), and Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) combined to throw a one-hitter while striking out eight.

Wilkes returns to the field Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled against Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Virginia Wesleyan College.
