COLLECTIVE TEAM EFFORT LEADS WILKES BASEBALL OVER PENN COLLEGE 7-5

WILKES-BARRE – Five different hitters had two hits apiece to help lead Wilkes to a 7-5 win over Penn College Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Wilkes improves to 8-4 while Penn College falls to 3-6.

After the Wildcats put up a run in the top of the first, the Colonels matched them with a single tally when Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) singled and then scored on an Adam Misiura (Springbrook, PA/North Pocono) single.

Penn College responded with three runs in the top of the second before Wilkes scored two in the bottom half on a two run home run by Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville). Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) doubled to lead off the inning and set the stage for the first home run of Schappell's career. After shutting down the Wildcat offense for the next two innings, Wilkes took the lead for good with a three run fourth. Leaf singled and scored on a Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) triple to start the inning. Lopresto then singled to plate Skammer and later scored on a Misiura fielder's choice.

Wilkes garnered another single tally in the fifth when Skammer reached on a fielder's choice and was sent home on a Schappell single. Penn College was able to score one run in the seventh, but the Wildcat comeback fell short.

Penn College was led by Zach and Cody Buterbaugh who each had two hits apiece.

Schappell had a team-best three RBI's with the home run and the single. Lopresto, Misiura, Leaf, and Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood) each had two base hits. Marc Perry (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) collected his first win of the season tossing 2 1/3 innings of no hit relief while Tyler Schmitt (Gap, PA/Pequea Valley) earned his fourth save.

Wilkes returns to action Friday when they travel to play a single nine inning game at FDU-Florham. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
