WILKES BASEBALL DROPS TWO AGAINST FDU-FLORHAM SATURDAY
 
KINGSTON – Visiting FDU-Florham used the long ball at the plate to post a pair of wins over host Wilkes University Saturday afternoon in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Artillery Park. The Devils took game one 6-1 before posting a 10-7 victory in game two of the twin bill.
 
Wilkes slips to 9-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play. FDU-Florham improves to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in league contests.
 
FDU-Florham used two solo home runs and two, two-run doubles to open a 6-0 lead through five innings and secure the win in game one.
 
Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) plated the lone run for Wilkes in the seventh singling home Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) who began the inning with a base hit.
 
Adam Misiura (Springbrook, PA/North Pocono) recorded the loss on the mound for the Colonels pitching five innings allowing all six runs on nine hits while striking out six Devils. Zach Lazar (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) entered in relief going the final two frames scoreless allowing three hits.
 
Wilkes was unable to muster a string of hits together in the contest finishing with six total hits. Ring led the offense finishing 2-for-3 with the run scored in the seventh.
 
FDU-Florham began game two scoring four runs on one swing of the bat as a grand slam home run gave the Devils a 4-0 lead after one inning.
 
After FDU-Florham extended the lead to 6-0 in its next at-bats, Wilkes responded with two tallies in the bottom half of the inning as Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) connected on a two-run double scoring Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) and Ring to cut the advantage to 6-2.
 
FDU-Florham continued to use the long ball to add to its lead hitting two solo home runs in the third to up the lead to 8-2. The Colonels answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) notched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to deep left field plating Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) on the play.
 
Two more Devil solo home runs gave FDU-Florham some breathing room taking a 10-5 advantage to the seventh. Wilkes made things interesting in its last at-bats as Ring and Benner hit RBI singles to cut the lead to 10-7 keeping the bases loaded with one out. Lopresto popped out to shortstop and Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) struck out to end the Wilkes comeback attempt.
 
Benner and Lopresto led the offense with two hits each. Brandon Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) picked up the loss on the hill going two innings allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits.
 
Wilkes returns to the diamond Monday when the Colonels host Lebanon Valley College at 2:30 p.m. for a nine-inning affair at Artillery Park.
