WILKES BASEBALL SPLITS WITH EASTERN 6-5, 2-7

KINGSTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball squad won game one 6-5 with a walk off grand slam from Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) before falling in game two 2-7 to split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Eastern at Artillery Park Saturday afternoon.

After today Wilkes turns 14-10 overall and 6-8 in Freedom play while Eastern resumes at 13-12 and 5-9 in league play.

In game one, offensively, Wilkes struck first after Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) retired the Eagles in order in the first racking up two strikeouts on the way. Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) led off the bottom half the inning being hit by a pitch while Schappell walked and Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. A two run single by Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) gave Wilkes the 2-0 edge.

Condo worked magnificently and was perfect through the first four and 2/3 innings. Anthony Messina broke up the perfecto with a single to right field with two outs in the fifth. He was plated on a Ryan Mcmenamin triple to right center field. The Eagles used the momentum to garner two runs in each of the next two innings to take a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagle arms couldn't find the strike zone and allowed three free passes to load the bases. Ruch came to the plate living every little kids dream, connecting on a first pitch fastball for a walk off grand slam over the left center field fence.

Ruch was a perfect 4-for-4 with all six RBI's.

Condo worked six innings allowing all five Eastern runs while Tyler Schmitt (Gap, PA/Pequea Valley) came in to throw one inning picking up a strikeout and snagging the win. Despite only throwing one pitch, Anthony Messina collected the loss.

In game two, the Eagles struck for two runs in the first before plating four runners in the third. Wilkes got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Ruch and Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) hit back-to-back doubles. Pisanchyn scored later on a Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) groundout.

Eastern garnered another single tally in the top of the seventh, and Wilkes couldn't manage any offensive rhythm to fall 7-2.

Ruch went 2-for-3 in game two to go 6-for-7 with six RBI's on the day. Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) added two hits while Pisanchyn added a double.

Lucas Bremmerman worked all seven innings, scattering seven hits and picking up four strikeouts.
Brandon Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) picked up the loss allowing five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

The two playoff striving squads will face off tomorrow for the nine inning finale. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
