WILKES SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT EASTERN

ST. DAVID'S – The Wilkes University Lady Colonel softball team dropped game one 4-3 before falling 4-3 in the nightcap in Freedom Conference action Monday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels fall to 9-19 overall and 2-8 in league action while the Eagles improve to 9-19 and 3-7 in the league.

In game one, the Lady Colonels struck for one tally in the top of the first. After Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) singled and later moved to second on a fielder's choice, she was plated on an RBI single from Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood).

Eastern would garner three runs in the third, highlighted by a two RBI double off the bat of Janelle Fair. However, Wilkes would tie the ballgame with two runs in the top of the sixth. After a Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) single, Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) sent a two run blast over the left field fence. Eastern scored a lone tally in the bottom of the sixth, and a Coyle single in the seventh put the tying run on base, but that was all the offense Wilkes could muster falling 4-3.

Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) absorbed the loss, scattering six hits, two strikeouts, and four runs in a complete game effort. Fair got the win allowing nine hits and three runs.

In game two, the Lady Colonel bats could never find rhythm, collecting two runs off two hits in the top of the fourth. Coyle started the inning, reaching on an error. A Paveletz single plated Coyle and a Hoops double plated Paveletz. Fair forced two groundouts to escape further damage in the inning. The Eagles were able to score four runs on nine hits, while Wilkes scored two runs on two hits.

Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) garnered the loss, allowing nine hits and three earned runs in all six innings.

Wilkes returns to the pitch tomorrow when they travel to Penn State Hazelton for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
