WILKES BASEBALL COLLECTS 24 HITS IN 14-7 WIN OVER MARYWOOD

KINGSTON – Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) laced five hits each leading the Wilkes University baseball team to a 14-7 non-conference win over Marywood at Artillery Park Sunday.

Wilkes improves to 19-11 overall as Marywood falls to 11-18.

The Colonel bats were alive all game, scoring in every inning except the fifth. The big innings were recorded in the bottom of the first and seventh. In the first, Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) reached on a muffed ball by the shortstop before Ruch singled. Joe Dantas (Reading, PA/Fleetwood) then laced a two run double to left center field and came around to score on an errant throw by the Pacer center fielder.

In the seventh, the Colonels batted around, scoring six runs on four hits. Schappell singled while Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) and Skammer walked to load the bases. Then, Ruch hit a bloop RBI single to right field and Dantas collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field. Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) collected an RBI on a single up the middle while Zac Berg garnered an RBI on a bases loaded walk. Nick Craig (Springfield, PA/The Haverford School) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to cap the Colonel scoring in the inning.

Schappell and Ruch led the team with five hits apiece, with Ruch hitting his eighth home run of the year. Skammer, Ring, and winning pitcher Adam Misiura (Springbrook, PA/North Pocono) laced three hits each.

Misiura earned his third win of the season, fanning five batters while scattering six hits and five runs in five innings. Angelo Trento (Jamesburg, NJ/Jamesburg) worked a perfect two innings, facing the minimum, and striking out two Pacers. Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia), in his fourth relief appearance of the season, worked the final two innings.

Wilkes has a quick turnaround as they host Mount Aloysius for a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
