SMITH/KERR LEADS WILKES WOMEN'S LACROSSE OVER EASTERN 18-12
ST. DAVIDS, PA – Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) and Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon) scored six goals each to lead the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 victory over Eastern in their Freedom Conference opener Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Wilkes improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Freedom play while Eastern falls to 0-9 and 0-1 in the league.

The Lady Colonel victory is the first Freedom Conference win since the 2010 season when Wilkes defeated cross-town rival King's College 18-15 in the season finale. It is their first win over Eastern in program history.

In the opening period, Wilkes and Eastern battled to a 6-6 tie with 8:30 left to play. Smith scored four times, while Kerr and Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) each added a single tally. In the remaining eight minutes, Kerr helped her team by scoring three times as Ford and Smith each netted goal to give the Lady Colonels an 11-6 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) connected for a goal on a free position shot with 23:27 left to play. Kerr and Brownsey then traded the next four goals before Ally Bicskei (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) laced a goal on a dish from Melanie Rivera (Middletown, NY/Middletown). The Eagles scored four straight goals but a score from Smith made it an 18-12 game as the Eagle comeback fell short.

Wilkes returns to action when they host SUNY Maritime at Schmidt Stadium on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
