HUGHES PITCHES WILKES SOFTBALL TO SPLIT WITH MISERICORDIA

DALLAS, Pa. – Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) tossed a three hitter with eight strikeouts in a 3-2 win in game one before the Wilkes University softball team fell 8-0 in game two to earn a split with Misericordia Wednesday afternoon.

In game one, Hughes kept the Cougars off balance and at bay the whole game only allowing single tallies in the first and sixth innings. Neither run was earned.

Wilkes tied the game at one in the fifth, when Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) singled home Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) who singled earlier in the inning. Wilkes struck for another single tally in the sixth, when Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) scored on an RBI groundout from Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Phillips singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor).

The Cougars responded with a single run in the bottom of the sixth, aided by an error and a pair of singles. In the top of the eighth, Wilkes scored when Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) hit a ball that was misplayed by the third basemen.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the frame, but Hughes escaped the jam with a pop up to the shortstop and a strikeout to end the game.

Coyle and Paveletz each had two hits for Wilkes. Misericordia had four different players hit singles.

In game two, it was all Misericordia, pounding out eight runs on ten hits, taking advantage of four Lady Colonel errors.

Wilkes was led by Seccia who had three base hits. Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) garnered the loss.

The Lady Colonels finish the season at 17-23 while the Cougars finish at 16-22.
